After bringing bagels to my dad I think I've gotten all the adventure logs updated over here!

https://eli.li/december-adventure

There are so many! Don't hesitate to send me more throughout the month -- you can start whenever.

Also, to all my new followers, hello, hi, welcome, but also brace yourself for me probably posting a lot more about birds and Jane Austen than I do about rust or whatever. :blobpeek:

Happy #DecemberAdventure ya'll!

Day 1 of my #DecemberAdventure was split between a few things:

First, collecting so many adventure logs!

Next, adding like 5 lines of code to my sandy metronome to add a “clear” button to clear the canvas of digital sand (which is sort of more like pollen or something sticky, tbh).

Last but not least, I started a little sketch for a narrative text adventure game engine. I’ve got a working and ferociously buggy prototype up and running.

Day 2 of my #decemberAdventure was all about the broughlike I've been working off and on for the past few weeks.

I cleaned up the code a bit and added an auto play feature so that now the little character can zoot itself around the levels looking for collectables, battling enemies and fleeing through the exits.

I also updated the list of adventure logs with even more adventure logs!

Day 3 of the #DecemberAdventure...and I feel it appropriate to shout "REMIX!" in an unironic way.

https://eli.li/december-adventure-2024#section-2

...also rust. I revisited a thing in rust...but that is unimportant because REMIX!

I really enjoyed reading @spiralganglion's and Conrad's code.

Day 4 of the #DecemberAdventure brought me back to the broughlike...with no real progress to show, but that is cool! I got to think through a different approach to autoplay, and, while I found that it didn't work at all, I think it could work with the application of more brain power...which I am lacking at the moment. :yell:

Day 5 of the #DecemberAdventure and, honestly, I thought I was gonna chill this evening and not do any code, but then my 8 year old and I pulled together the bones of a little gravity platformer game!

Day 6 of the #DecemberAdventure --a sequal is born!

I worked a bit more on that platformer jumping game -- a lot of it is honestly copy-pasta from other stuff I've made this year, but I'm pleased with this so far, and my kid loves it.

Arrow keys to move. The space bar or G key to flip gravity.

Day 7 of the #DecemberAdventure welcomes a new log to the list, and more polish/bug fixes to mountain.

Mountain is a little procedurally generated platforming game that I'm thinking of as the sequal to hill, a demake of alto's adventure that I made about a year ago.

I was excited today when part of mountain's source code reminded me of a poem, so, that is in there, too.

Day 8 of the #DecemberAdventure kicked off early because I decided while shoveling away some snow that mountain would be more or less done if it had a hard mode.

...so it now has a hard mode and a super hard mode.

It is really fun to say "lerp." https://eli.li/december-adventure-2024#section-8

Day 12 of the #DecemberAdventure -- a gallent return!

Day 13 of the #DecemberAdventure -- the little black square got an eye!?

The eye show what direction the character is facing, and is tied to the recharge time for the push. Left to its own devices, too, it'll look around a little bit.

Day 14 of the #DecemberAdventure -- I figured, now that the little black square has an eye, it should have a world to explore...and, like, technically, I made one.

It is remarkably, heiniously, shockingly ugly, though.

I think I need to stick to monochrome colors schemes for the time being. :yell:

Day 15 of the #DecemberAdventure started early!

I had an idea for how to vastly simplify drawing a bunch of the map, and also how to de-uglify it.

I think I've met success! :please_no: :please:

I've also started to rough in the primary mechanics...I'm hoping those are easy because I think I can mostly lift things out of some previous stuff I made this year.

Day 17 of the #DecemberAdventure was an early one! I woke up first thing before anyone else in the family and started to add enemies to the little game.

...and then this evening I cleaned my desk. It isn't like the cozy, colorful space I wish it was, but it is clean and that is a start. I've included a blury photo by ways of proof.

Day 19 of the #DecemberAdventure, in which I started my day by playing squash! 10/10, do recommend.

I also got the sword swinging, little black square adventure game to a shareable state! Go forth and play it! Let me know if it crashes...I don't think it likes WebKit. Not mobile friendly. Needs a keyboard.

Day 22 of the #DecemberAdventure was a return to an oldie, but a goodie!

I revisited a pixel art drawing toy that I made a while back today. I made it work a bit better on touch devices. It is still much better with a mouse than on a touchscreen, I think, but it at least works on mobile now, too!

My kids use this on all the time, actually, so I was nervous to change things too much since this one is mostly for them.

Draw me a goblin!

Day 26 of the #DecemberAdventure!

https://eli.li/december-adventure-2024#section-25

I added some themes to my quest log! Light, dark, and bubblegum.

I think this’ll be the last log for 2024's adventuring.

I’ve had a blast, and I’m really happy that so many other folks joined in this year. I find it really inspiring to see everyone’s projects and approaches to creative, playful coding and project-ing.

Being able to form a little community, even if distant and ephemeral, seems good and important these days.

A huge thanks to everyone who encouraged this, and who followed along or participated in any way. Thank you!

Keep adventuring!

I really appreciate that you set up a container for sharing ideas/practices. Mine ended up being a bit niche but it was nice to know that other folks were scratching their own itches.

Going forward, I am planning on keeping a log of my technical play. Doing so during #DecemberAdventure proved really useful.
