Okay, rant coming in...

So I just got forwarded a website with a supposed #longcovid remedy. Well meant, of course, by the people sending it my way.

Slick looking site, lots of "testimonials" by happy clients (patients? customers?). Some talk about statistical research showing It Works, Really!

I don't trust it one bit.

There's actually a disclaimer on the site, stating it isn't medical advice, nor scientifically proven to cure any illness.

Yeah, thought so.

Two red flags identified:

🚩 The supposed therapy has a trademark.

🚩 It's supposed to help with myriad illnesses and afflictions, that aren't related in any way - except maybe that they're hard to pinpoint and show some overlap in symptoms. Think: from PTSD to me/cvs, but also eating disorders and insomnia.

That last bit reminds me of Pippi Longstockings in the pharmacy, where she orders ten liters of medicine. What kind of medicine? Well, against (insert litany of childhood illnesses). Then she adds: it would be amazing if you could polish furniture with it!

Well yes, it would be amazing, wouldn't it? Incredible, even.

My new rule of thumb:

If your remedy has a trademark and reminds me of Pippi and her furniture polishing medicine, I'm sceptical.

Also

I really don't want to run after and cling to every quack therapy that comes around.

I don't like being ill. I hate that I have so little energy to do the stuff I love, that some of those things I can't do at all anymore.

And I'd rather spend this limited energy on stuff I like, with the people I love, than on chasing the dream of getting better via some miracle cure.

Anyway.
