I have a #rstats #terra question. I am bundling a package which needs to load some shapefiles (*.shp). Where is the preferred location for shapefiles in a package? extdata?

@joaquimpuig would love to know the answer, I've been facing the same problem (although with Geopackages rather than Shapefiles)

@jimbob @joaquimpuig

If they are big why not s3 or any object storage?

@defuneste @joaquimpuig is it normal to store R package data (eg. for examples) outside the package? I have to maintain that S3 storage so the package's examples still run if someone installs the archive in 10 years?

(In my case they aren't big, but I do get package build errors about invalid ASCII every time I include Geopackages, so I'm clearly doing it wrong).

@jimbob @defuneste @joaquimpuig I bundled gpkg in this package and it's working. Maybe you should have a look. https://github.com/oousmane/afribat
