Cancelling Bell phone Attempt 1: called the number for my province. It failed. Maybe because I called from my cell phone and not from the (former) land line. The land line hasn't had a dial tone the last few weeks. Don't know why? DSL internet still works.

Cancelling Bell phone Attempt 2: called the number for calls from outside my province. They insist on knowing why I'm cancelling. That got put on the back burner while they try to validate my identity. It turns out they cannot validate my identity and I need to bring two pieces of ID to a Bell kiosk. They first asked for SIN and driver's license. After I rejected SIN, they eventually settled for "citizenship number", for which a passport would work. It is in safety deposit box. Argh

Cancelling Bell phone Attempt 3: went to a Bell store and told them the person on the phone wanted me to come to the store - she said she could not help me herself but gave me a "direct number" to someone who could cancel it.

Cancelling Bell phone Attempt 4: called the "direct number" and asked to cancel the service. After back and forth "why?" "I no longer require this service", and he obtained my (non-Bell) cell number, he went ahead and scheduled the cancellation for Friday.

I will have to check with a store on my account balance towards the end of the month and hopefully that's it.

I don't have a "mybell" account and although the lady on the first call wanted me to set one up, I didn't in the end.

So I'm glad I didn't have to give them more info than they already had, and hopefully this is the end of it. But I will have to put notes in my agenda to make sure it is final, and also to ensure no more payments get made after the final one.

It will be hard to tell if they cut off the service, there is already no dial tone. I don't know why. I hardly ever use the land line and had not noticed the lack of dial tone for a couple of weeks at least. Not much point to keep it at that rate.

In case anyone else needs to do something similar ... I did call my (non-Bell) ISP and asked them to switch my DSL internet to "dry loop", and made sure that was complete before cancelling the phone line. Otherwise there could have been a week-long internet interruption.
