My son has been permanently banned from WhatsApp after some confusion to do with his phone number in different countries (he is a journalist). Does anyone here have any experience dealing with a situation like this or have a contact at Meta/WhatsApp who might be able to help? He is distraught because of the groups and history he has lost access to 😔

What he is intending to do is to stay on a service that just has proven to him that he is the pawn and they are the landlords.

He should seriously consider to start from scratch and use only decentralized systems, in the case of messaging most likely matrix/element. Even more is he is into journalism.

To recover what he can from contacts, I guess the easiest way is to take a new phone number and contact his old groups and contacts asking for email addresses and start using delta chat.

@jesuisatire This isn’t a real solution to the problem. Sources aren’t on Delta Chat — sources are on Whatsapp.

I thought there is responsibility to protect the sources.

Whats app is anything but secure in that regard.

I guess in any case what anyone would want to do is contact the sources with some pseudonym on whatsapp to create a communication for example with delta chat, which is actually simple encrypted email. Or matrix, which is decentralized, encrypted and doesn't need a telephone number to sign on.

No phone number required, decentralized and encrypted is basics in my opinion.

@jesuisatire The responsibility is to go where the sources are. And if you don’t, then someone else will and you don’t get the story. Journalists cannot afford to draw lines in the sand like that
