First hike in 2 months. It was really nice hearing the crunch of fresh snow, even if there was only a little. #hiking

This was a short (1.7 mile, 600ft) hike in light snow. My first after breaking a toe back in October.
My toe was fine on ascent and had mild discomfort on descent (final 1/3 of the hike). I’d say that’s success. I think I’m ready for more of these and gradually ramping up distance and elevation.
Legs felt good, we’ll see how they feel tomorrow after my gap in exercise.
The tough part will be finding days to hike with the early winter sunsets and work.

Update from Sunday’s short hike. My legs are miraculously still in hiking shape and had only minor soreness, although I’m sure with less endurance, but sadly my toe discomfort worsened and persisted for several days. Even pangs of sharper pain (when not on my feet at all), which hadn’t happened in weeks.
Further hiking will probably need to wait a bit longer. I’ll continue enjoying all the photos folks are posting of mountains.

@onelin That’s great news, Joshua, that your toe has healed enough for you to be able to start back on the trails! I know it’s been a long haul for you and it will be a while until you’re 100%. Good luck on the rest of your recovery.

@onelin Great news!
Guess what happened here yesterday? Door vs. toes and the door won.
I'm really hoping it isn't broken. There was a lot of pain during skiing and the toe is quite purple.

@jerzone oh no! :( I hope for your sake it isn’t broken. Pain that wouldn’t go away was my signal :/

@onelin It's not as painful as it was yesterday, maybe I'll just lose a toenail. Went for a fat bike ride this morning and it was ok, no real toe stress inside a boot on flat pedals.

Seeing this "disturbing" pattern of hikers suffering their worst injuries inside the "safety" of their own home! I damaged a toe last winter-- not sure if broken or damaged the cartilage. Knocked me out of action for several weeks. Still disfigured.
I've been wearing sandals inside the house ever since to protect myself from the dangers of walking around furniture.
Maybe we let down our guards inside the house?

@TimKStanton @onelin I've been side-eyeing that door every time I walk by it now. 😒
It's like flat pedals, the majority of shin strikes/wounds I get from them is moving the bike in the garage or at trailhead, not expecting I need to pay close attention.

I have also had minor falls in the last mile of a hike. Flat terrain, nothing to worry about. All the sketchy parts are behind me. My mind starts to wander and then, boom, I trip and do a face plant!

@TimKStanton @onelin That was my last big fall, almost at the end of a long trail run feeling pretty cocky about how well I did, and zoom I am flying through the air to land in a rock garden!

I think these falls are candidates for "funniest home videos"-- falling down on flat ground. 😂

@TimKStanton @onelin It didn't feel very funny! 😆
This was after flailing arm open on a tree mt biking, a couple days before surgery to get that fixed. I landed on other arm.

Ugh, agree, not so funny.

So sorry your recovery is taking so long, Joshua. Sounds like you’ve been working hard at taking care of the toe. Hope you are near the turning point of this.

@TimKStanton yeah, it’s a bummer. I am hitting milestones, the hiking one just isn’t quite there yet. No pain barefoot walking. Able to wear normal shoes again. No discomfort for 1-2 weeks prior. Stretching my toes gently in both directions multiple times daily pain free…
I think descent just puts too much weight and pressure on it, even in boots, that it’s still not quite ready for it. Ascent was 100% fine but I do need to get down. Descent is when it started and I don’t think it was the last .6 miles of distance that was an issue.
