Re the disappearing plane: If it crashed, or landed hard at the end of that track, someone probably should have noticed and posted on the internet by now (OTOH, there's A Lot Going On Right Now)

If they turned off the transponder and headed for some 3rd country, you'd expect them to turn it back on once in friendly / neutral airspace

Nothing on FIRMS in that area, but it's cloudy.

Could have flown to the Russian base in Latakia without a transponder and continued on with a different aircraft

Yeah, things could very easily go quite bad from here, but perhaps rather than crying over the guy who liked dropping sarin on civilians, one's energy could be better spent finding ways to encourage the various parties to avoid the worst outcomes

Russians accused Ukraine of having a hand in this (in reality, a minor one if there's any truth to it at all) but ironically from a strictly military POV, Assad getting beat so badly the Russians pack up and go home without a fight would not be what they were aiming for. Not that anyone in Ukraine will be shedding tears about the actual outcome, of course
