I've managed to come up with site security settings in Firefox that keep #Twitter content from loading if I click on it without thinking. I haven't yet figured out how to keep Twitter content embedded in someone else's web page from loading in my browser.

If you're comfortable with editing system files, you can add lines to your system's 'hosts' file redirecting x.com and twitter.com to 127.0.0.1.
