Meh. My game PC just randomly shuts itself down and reboots. No bluescreen involved. Just suddenly off. Sounds like a faulty PSU? 🤔

@sige
I've had those issues for a long time with my system. Sometimes multiple times a day, then months without issues. I already swapped every component except for CPU and Motherboard. It could be anything.

@Colin I rule out the ram tho. I'd get a bluescreen in that case...

@sige
My main concern is the Mainboard at the moment. I have an Asus X370 Pro and a friend of mine told me that he had some issues with it in the past.

@sige @Colin is that the only evidence you have against a RAM fault? If there's a bad bit in a region that's used by firmware, it can definitely lead to shutting off before the OS has so much as a chance to notice. Did you run memtest86(+)?
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from lambda@chaosfurs.social
@lambda I think it's unlikely that is the issue due to that, yeah. Either way I can definitely try running a test too.
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from sige@meow.social
@sige could also be a temperature issue

@takios Event logs don't indicate any throttling of the CPU before reset

@sige "Shuts down and reboots" or just suddenly reboots/resets?
If the latter, yes, fair chance it's a PSU brownout, and yes it can easily start happening as the components age out.
Got anyone you could trade with for a day or two to see if your problem goes away without buying new parts blind?

@Tvorsk like click power gone. Then click is back and booting up 🤔
Not sure if I have someone with a spare
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from sige@meow.social
@sige Argh. Yeah in this case it'll be really good to check with another PSU before buying a replacement. Very well can be, doesn't have to...
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from Tvorsk@meow.social
@Tvorsk might have to replace my rig anyways. It's getting kind of old at this point
=> More informations about this toot | More toots from sige@meow.social
@sige Well then I guess you can get a new nice high power PSU, if it helps, great, and in either case can be then moved to your next build...
How old is old though? :p

@Tvorsk I think it must be close to 10 years now. Did add some ram and swapped the GPU tho.
It got an Intel i7-5820k in it

@sige Well, yeah.
On one hand, even "this old" PCs have plenty of power to deal with basic stuff.
On the other, it's definitely old enough to have trouble with heavier work, and for hardware to start misbehaving with age.
Good luck, it's never a fun expense :(

@sige Was the PSU for me, which was undersized by the width of a hair after I'd upgraded my GPU. Same issue you're reporting, but it'd only trigger once very blue moon (and in a game notorious for causing these kinds of issues). Bought a bigger one, problems disappeared.
I still have my old one lying around, if you'd like to try. It's a 2020 be quiet! Straight Power 11 (750W)

@garra that would be really awesome if I could try with that one! :blobcatheart:
I'm with Shian this weekend, so it might just be decent timing!

@sige
Sounds familiar. I had the same problem about a year ago.
And for me it actually was the PSU. It's admittedly pretty old by now and the fan just stopped working.
But when I found out I just gave it a tiny poke with a pencil and since then it started working again no problem :neodog_think:
