We're discussing body armor in speculative fiction (mostly sci-fi, particular Dune and Mass Effect), both some of the problems with the way it is depicted and structured and also some the reasons I think those visual tropes exist.

@bretdevereaux It kind of sounds like Star Wars' stormtrooper armour is reasonable - it's made of rigid plates joined by flexible material at the joints.
Stargate is interesting about this. Jaffa armour is bulky and impractical... but the show explicitly acknowledges that Goa'uld equipment is inferior to that of Earth, as it is designed primarily for intimidation rather than killing.
