Hey @Kels_316 (or, for that matter, anyone else who knows about this stuff) do you have Opinions on COSPAS/SARSAT 406MHz locator beacon thingies vs. the two way Iridium (etc) type ones?
Use case: injury bad enough to require S&R when I just happen to be out of 4G coverage for a bit.

@nickzoic I think if you just want in-extremis SAR coverage they are fine. The advantage of the in-reach and other similar two-way units is you can be tracked live, send 'I'm still fine' messages etc...

@Kels_316 Yeah I'm trying to balance the benefits of "I'm still fine" messages vs. having a section in my eulogy about forgetting to charge my phone and/or pay the subscription fees.

@nickzoic the cheapest option is the 406 PLB, for sure. And for most people that's going to be all they need. The extra cost of the two-way comms and tracking might not be worth it if you dont really need that.

@Kels_316 yeah, most of the trips I do are in good mobile coverage most of the time, and for mechanical failures there's generally a hilltop nearby I could walk up to for coverage, but even in the mountains not far from Melbourne there's some pretty big areas where the phone is telling me it has no network & I'd not like to be in the middle of one of those with a broken leg.

@nickzoic the newer iphones have sat emergency texting, if you are thinking about a new phone. But yeah I'd go for a basic PLB unless you wanted to have the extra features and didn't mind the costs.

@nickzoic @Kels_316 "JRCC received a satellite detection of a PLB, in vicinity of Dove Lake, Cradle Mountain, Tasmania. The encoded position was in vicinity of Dove Lake Boatshed.... TAS Police located the distressed party who had become tired two hours into the walk and activated the beacon. He was transported out of the National Park by Police." lol, lmao

@neoluddite @nickzoic "grave and immediate danger" is a sliding scale from 'life threatening injury" through to "breathing too heavy and a bit sweaty"
