Any recommendations for a good open #ebookreader? I have an oldish Kindle Paperwhite (from 2018) and it's software updates are a shining example of #enshitificaton and #plannedobsolesence. The interface is getting worse and I have less control over it then I did when I bought it. It is also annoyingly sluggish now (I assume newer models are fare better).

I would like to jailbreak it but I seem to missed the opportunity because it auto updates itself (another reminder that I am not in control of the device) when I connect it to wifi. I have to connect occasionally to share passages I have highlighted.

I don't buy books from Amazon anymore and don't want to support that terrible corporation. So I want some other #ebookreader and ideally I want one where rooting is officially supported. Should have the resolution of Paperwhite at least.

@mousebot thanks! Onyx products look quite good but you can tell they don't update Android and I don't know if it is possible to put an alternate rom on it.

Kobo seems to be on the road to lockdown from internet searches e.g. https://github.com/Quill-OS/quill?tab=readme-ov-file
