just when your sleep schedule was approximately normal again, Charlotte de Witte is playing all night at Watergate, which is also closing in 4 weeks, and I haven't visited in checks notes 8 years? Great.

How long is the queue: approaching halfway across the river. What's that in minutes? Don't know. Not short, but there have been longer in Berlin. Why do I choose to walk 30 minutes, then arrive 20 minutes later than if I took the train the whole way, when I know there will be a long queue? Don't know.. let this toot timestamp my arrival at 22:15 so I can see how long the queue was when I'm at the front of it.

got in about 01:40 so the line was that long. I was turned away for being a single male and then I showed them my VIP token thing. I never heard of a #Berlin techno club doing the gender ratio thing, although (1) I don't go to them very often and (2) Watergate isn't really a Berlin club, just one that happens to be geographically located there.

Jam packed, and the light show is as cool as I remembered. So is the river view. They've got some setup that projects the Watergate logo all over the bridge, that wasn't there last time I was here (I think).

observations about watergate's pixel display for the purpose of possibly making an equally awesome one in the future:

  1. it's big as fuck

  1. it's bright as fuck (relative to what you'd expect from a pixel display) and is the main light source for the upstairs dance floor

  1. it's 15 pixels wide x arbitrary length (I estimate 120). that divides into 5 and 3.

  1. the vertical segment at each end makes it go out of sight in a sensible way instead of having to stretch out to infinity or have an unnatural end

  1. just about any fast moving pattern and some slow ones look impressive on a display of this scale

also, the downstairs floor has ceiling lighting made of an arbitrary arrangement of interlocking rectangle outlines, stacked in 3D space, with lights on the top and bottom of each, addressable per rectangle edge (and separately on the top and bottom)

despite not having granular addressability they run gradient transitions over it anyway and they don't look bad

So #berlin #watergate is mid and has no soul, and #CharlottedeWitte is also overrated and wasn't even my favourite set last night (I was wrong about her being on all night btw). Still glad I revisited though.

I asked them about this good coloured disc with a Watergate logo that cost me €1000 in 2020. It (a) has no official name and (b) entitles me to enter for free, skip the queue, not be denied entry for trivial reasons, and bring another person under the same conditions. So I guess now I have to be there on the final session on New Year's Eve even though it's pretty mid. It would be a shame to NOT skip that queue and already sold out tickets.
