4 months now post-shingles. The blur in my left eye gives some pretty spectacular blooms around lights. I still find it amazing that I can still read pretty well with it when it’s clear there’s damage. Our brains are mental - like if I have both eyes open and read, everything is clear unless I close my right eye. But if I am in a room with lights, there’s bloom around all of them unless I close my left eye. Also, don’t get shingles. It’s fucked.

Related: Make sure your kids can't get shingles by having them vaccinated against chickenpox (you only get shingles if you had chickenpox at some point of your life)

@Doomed_Daniel the vaccine is on the Australian recommended national immunisation schedule and we would have given both our kids the vaccine at 18 months. But it’s not the most effective vaccine and both our kids have since had chickenpox (before I got shingles).
My understanding is the biggest risk with shingles is giving a pregnant woman chickenpox which is linked to potential birth deformities.

Damn, I thought at least the chickenpox vaccine was reliable :-/
There's also vaccine against shingles, at least here (Germany) I think only/mostly old people get it, but it doesn't seem to be very effective either (I know an old lady who was vaccinated and still got shingles multiple times, and not just mild infections either)

@nickappleton ugh, that really sucks :( I got shingles last March/April and it was terrible. I had no idea how bad it could hurt; luckily I had no ocular effects... I am still dealing with scars from it with a dermatologist - but it gets better every month, and there's a chance they won't be visible.

@BartWronski considering how messed up my face was, it’s amazing how much better it looks now. I’m just thankful that it only went on the cornea and didn’t go near the retina - that could have been much worse.
Where I got unlucky was that it started on my scalp and I had no idea it was shingles until it went below my hairline. It was just itchy and I thought I’d got nits from one of my kids. By the time I saw a doctor, the antivirals were not as effective.

@nickappleton ugh, I feel so sorry for you, sounds really horrible :(
I had a “classic” one, much more lucky - stripe going from my back to my belly. I also didn’t recognize it right away, I thought it was sudden acne or weird allergy. Only my wife recognized it and told me to see a doctor and I think it was also too late for the antivirals to work properly.
