We went to the #IPv6 council meeting in the UK. In a change from previous years there was a lot from networks which mostly run IPv6 with IPv4 now increasingly being a legacy compatibility option. https://www.mythic-beasts.com/blog/2024/11/26/ipv6-networking-in-the-uk/

@beasts How would broader, more open #IPv6 adoption affect e.g., web use? Can we safely assume DNS will hide IPv6 addresses as seamlessly as it hides IPv4 now?

@albertcardona
End to end communication, no translation, as you read in the sky example, probably faster. DNS will hide addresses.

@albertcardona IPv4 path might be sub-optimal because you have to be brought to a central point to share your public IP with other network users. IPv6 can just let the network pick the best path end to end, and you have no NAT boxes doing translation in the middle.

@albertcardona we can have this now. We've a NAT64 service in each zone, if it's offline for maintenance you get rerouted to another zone, which if you're in Amsterdam getting data from Amsterdam might involve a trip via London.

@beasts
Thank you for the post and the summary.
May I propose to reword "fake" to "synthesized" an "clatd" to "CLAT".

@beasts let me guess: absolute silence from Virgin Media/Liberty Global, as per usual?

@beasts I see you reference Microsoft stating at the meeting that they can see now that they should have delivered DHCP Op108/CLAT support earlier.
Did they give any indication on timelines/roadmap for that one? I had hoped for it in the latest Windows 11 update but it didn’t show up :blob_cry:
