I hate "fighting" against script language internals like #python and #lua, it feels like fighting #unity and #godot to get the results you want by fiddling with nobs...
the problem is that I was using a normal table, which itself had tables of x monsters. when a table exhausted its supply of monsters, lua removed any reference to the table immediately, as if it were never there (because it was technically empty).
my solution? add a pointer to itself, so it always knows where it came from :p
