@simplex if you are saying private and comparing metadata leaker like matrix. Then why not compare with the mother of all messaging protocols? You can self host! You can have omemo. Working since 1999. What else? Google, whatsapp apple uses for push?

@methuselah XMPP has very similar problems as matrix, Matrix was just used as an example of federated messaging network.

Don't think WhatsApp uses it anymore. We believe that protocols only matter if successful products use them, and it's important to be in control of protocol to be able to build a successful product.
