@antonia if you want to "disassemble" them into readable text you can edit and then assemble back (without losing any detail) i recommend qpdf --qdf. the "disassembly" you get is really just a PDF in its text-only form, so it can be opened in a text editor, and with some added metadata to rebuild indexes IIRC

@antonia i think even with --qdf there might still be embedded binary streams for stuff like fonts, so better use a text editor that doesn't choke on those
