TenTec Orion Repair. Final Part.

4/n

OK, long posts, but it was no easy task... and I'm quite proud to have resurrected this great machine.

Interestingly, there are 11 years of continuous firmware updates between the first Orion firmware (2002/2003) and the latest v3 firmware (May 2015).

Now that's what I call user support!

(This rig was perfectly aligned. It was maintained by no less than AOR in the UK.)

End of the #Tentec Orion Saga!

@F4JWJ Enjoy your Orion. I had the pleasure to use one quite a lot around 2006 at the DL1A contest station. The receiver and filters were excellent, but I can remember frequent crashes and reboots driving me crazy sometimes. Still, good memories 🙂

@DJ5CW

You look very serious here!

That's what I noticed on the v1 firmware: rough edges (to be polite). The v3 seems fine.

I compared with a FTdx10.

It is possible to recover CW signals buried in noise (I have plenty here!!!), but it requires some tinkering.

Depending on the strength of the signal, by playing with the HF gain to just trigger the AGC, plus the filters and noise reduction, you can even hear CW over an eerie silence...

(But the AF gain may have to be 100% up to compensate).
