Is there an athletic performance reason that the soles of sneakers/trainers/etc. often protrude from the back of the heel these days? Or is it just aesthetic (or both)? They feel kinda awkward to walk in.

@lauren my guess is it's to provide more shock absorbtion as your foot is coming down at an angle, heel-first, even though we're not supposed to move that way.
