I just noticed that when I set my iPhone camera ratio to 16:9 (from 4:3) it'll crop the top and bottom (reducing from 4032×3024 to 4032×2268) in the Photo app and in the version auto-uploaded by Nextcloud, but not in the one available from the filesystem (using ifuse). That's puzzling.

So it seems that when you change the aspect ratio in the camera settings, it'll actually apply the crop operation after saving it (like if you do it in the Photo app later).
So I guess Nextcloud app uploads the initial version and not the edited one.
iOS keeps an history of the edition so you can "revert" to the original as well.

Scratch that, it's the opposite. On the iPhone filesystem (exported through ifuse) the file is the original (uncropped) one. There's a .AAE file along with the binary edition (the cropping) which I guess is applied dynamically when displayed on the Photos app or exposed to Nextcloud (for auto-upload).
