What do you all think needs to change on #Mastodon to be a more attractive option than #Bluesky?

@EpicBear The fragmented/decentralised nature of Mastodon is a big turn off at the start of convincing people to come over. Though I would like to know why people like mastodon over other platforms. For me, it's the lack of engagement algorithm and ads.

@Psy_Fer_ For me, the fragmented part is about things like why can’t I easily like/reply to a comment on another server, or hashtag searches constrained to what servers you can see (this part has always been unclear to me). But the things I like about Mastodon overcome some of the weaknesses. As you’ve heard me say, I really like the lack of algorithms that promote or demote posts. I like that ultimately Mastodon isn’t super beholden to corporate interests or to a billionaire.

@EpicBear Like/reply of a post on another server should work okay? maybe I'm missing something there.

The searching stuff is centrally around privacy partitioning and making it harder for trolls and stalkers. But yes, it does make things a littler trickier as a user.

I am defs no billionaire nor is anyone developing mastodon (that i know of).

@Psy_Fer_ Regarding likes/replies of posts on other servers, I often click on the "See more replies on (name of some other server)" link so I can view the full thread (this also contributes to the fragmentation issue). When on the other server, if you want to interact with that post, e.g. like it, you get a dialog box with the message: "You are not logged in to this server. Where is your account hosted?" Then you go back to your home server to like the post.

@Psy_Fer_ I'm honestly surprised no one over the many years has tried to work on that but prioritized other features.

@EpicBear I wonder if it's something being worked on over on the GitHub. The cool thing about mastodon is you can just go look at the code and progress on features 😁

@Psy_Fer_ That's a good point. I looked at their roadmap and although that fragmentation issue isn't in the plans, this is: synchronizing boost and favourite counts for remote posts. Also, quote posting is on the roadmap. Not sure how I feel about that feature. All that said, I'm sure coding to improve Mastodon is a thankless endeavour. But of all the social media platforms out there, I think Mastodon has the most promise.

@EpicBear bluesky is literally just fancy mastodon with data harvesting and algorithmic engagement for ads. Threads too. Mastodon still the Kong of decentralised social media that actually works.

On that, I'm really unsure how I'm gonna deal with the new laws the Australian gov are trying to implement though. It could make mastodon impossible to exist without huge liability risk.

@Psy_Fer_ What's this new Australian law that might affect Mastodon?

@EpicBear banning kids under the age of 16(making all adults prove over 16), a duty of care law and a misinformation law. All of them are insane but have the backing of both major parties.

@Psy_Fer_ That sounds like a lot of change! The misinformation law seems like a tricky one.
