Latest escalation in poppy wars is the villages here all have enormous plastic poppies on street lamps, like Christmas and Halloween celebrations. Personally, this seems remarkably crass, insensitive and offensive. I’ll remember, not celebrate, my own way.

@benjohn I’m always struck each year by the fact that here in France there are no poppies, but that there is a public holiday on 11/11 with parades and remembrance. It therefore seems very British to place it on a Sunday and not give folks a day off from capitalism to remember. Perhaps not having been invaded and occupied marks the difference in approach.
