@n8gnj I enjoyed your coverage of much upheaval.
It struck me many of your examples of disintermediation involved new intermediaries, and Clay Christensen’s (flawed) “disruption” might prove a useful lens.
You could consider N7EBB and other small manufacturers, for example, as examples of MFJ being disrupted by JLCPCB and PCBWAY for manufacture, eBay and Etsy for markets or Crowd Supply and PayPal for storefronts, and Twitter and YouTube for marketing.

@n8gnj Similarly: OpenRTX, M17 and FreeDV are examples of open source disrupting proprietary development; RATPAC of Skype, StreamYard and YouTube disrupting conferences; Zero Retries and SARC of Google Drive and Substack disrupting magazine publishers; and so on.
We’re free of the shackles of our old gatekeepers! But, meet our new gatekeepers. Many of our “going direct to consumers” examples rely on giants like Google, Microsoft, PayPal, and Shopify.

@n8gnj The giants aren’t market-specific. They don’t even know you exist, and can crush you by accident without even noticing. At the other end, new market-specific gatekeepers might know you by name when they choose to lock you out.
Consider ARDC. They’re conspicuously different than other organisations on the list, because they have a massive pot of gold. You won’t get a share of it without dancing to their tune, and to whom they choose to grant it and not will shape the market.

@vk2tty I can personally attest that the barriers for ARDC to fund projects - big, or small, are reasonably low. At minimum, lower than other alternatives for grant funding in Amateur Radio.

@n8gnj Separately, thank-you for the link to APRS-local! Definitely my jam. I’ve intended to start broadcasting repeater info, but hadn’t found that page yet… or, frankly, hooked up my VP-Diji board to an antenna.
Adjacent idle plans: APRS-RFID style presence information for hams attending meetings and events; Bryan Hoyer K7UDR’ “hailing channels” idea (ZT0142)
