Wow. Thetrainline now opens your search in a new tab and then loads booking.com in the original tab. What a dark pattern!

@bennuttall do they.... do they think i'm going to book a holiday just because there's a browser tab open?

@bennuttall I don't understand why people use "Thetrainline" at all. You can get tickets for any route, at any operator. And the times are best found at https://traintimes.org.uk/

@derickr The journey I'm looking at now is £8.40 direct from northern, and £5.90 from thetrainline 🤷♂️

@bennuttall There is no reason why they are offering cheaper tickets. They must be available from another vendor too. (Unless they're burning investor money, I suppose)

@derickr Oddly it's £5.90 (no fee) in the app and £5 + £0.59 fee on the web. No idea what's going on.

@derickr Ok so northern was only offering two singles not a return, which is why it cost more. There seems to be no return ticket available, unless you use their "advanced search", which is a different coloured skin of ... thetrainline.

@derickr @bennuttall I search for "train timetables" on ecosia, click the sponsored link from the train line, find the times I'm after, and gleefully close the browser.
