I wanna say something to people who work in tech-related jobs in America: this is still a field where most people hate the rise of fascism and want to stop it. I know the media & amplification of the tycoons makes it seem like that’s the whole industry. But it’s not. And we still have power.

@anildash absolutely. There is good here, and we will be fine. I am seeing a disgusting amount of doom and gloom from the younger group in America.... they are scared. I get it... but we as a country have been through so much more. SO MUCH more... but so many democrats (I'm a dem) right now (I would say the far left) is freaking out publicly, trying to start a fuss, and actually sharing BS misinformation. They are doing things right out of the far right playbook. It's stupid.

@Vidmo @anildash Women have already died because of abortion restrictions in red states. Hispanic people will be harassed by immigration cops, and trans kids will be forced to stay in the closet. Maybe the worst-case scenarios won't come to pass, but lots of people have reason to be scared.

@samadeleine @anildash That is very true.... so horrible. I hope we can get this resolved. I have a good friend that went though this, lost his wife. I understand. But this isn't just Trump... that is some really fucked up republicans that are hyper focused on a God that they don't go a see every Sunday.

@Vidmo @samadeleine @anildash oh, no. It's very much Trump. From the very first time he laughed when he heard his supporters were beating up people just for being Hispanic way back durng his first campaign, he enabled and fostered such hate. He made it OK to show that type of action. He took control of the party by having no shame. Yes, he's made it much, much worse

@joncruz I think you may be giving that ONE man too much. Statistically, one man can not have that kind of effect. Even Hitler didn't have that... it was his inner circle, but it was also the German people. They loved him... until they didn't. That is what we are facing right now. Trump is a catalyst that brought out what we are seeing... lol Trump didn't do anything but give the real assholes a way to express their real intentions. Trump was his own pawn.

@Vidmo statistics can easily lie to you. It is possible for Spiders Georg to muck things up.

You're also missing some things on Hitler. They followed him until he died. After the fact many claimed otherwise. But they followed. Once he died so did the bulk of the movement.

I studied this a lot. Much while stationed literally in former Nazi barracks.

I also listen to the experts in Nazi history. Those academics have also been trying to raise the alarm. Listen to them.

@Vidmo BTW, when I mentioned "studied" while I was in Germany, one of the main things if "studying" was the studying for my Sergeant's exam board. This was also the period of time when someone from my building (not unit) defected to the U.S.S.R., and when a west German youth landed a plane in Red Square. The board was tough (made the promotion list in only 2 years peacetime though. I definitely had to study hard)

@joncruz I do understand this.... I was a tad salty last night for reasons.... and that is great you did your advancement in 2 years. Military billets are sometimes very difficult due to a lot of politics and staffing.... so testing out that fast is amazing

@Vidmo @joncruz

Concentration camps started out as prisons for the Hitlers political opposition. They where rushed into existence because there wasn't enough space in Germany's prisons.

The political prisoners were released after a few months in the labor camps. "Work sets you free" was on the gates of these camps.

No Germans didn't love Hitler the way you think. Their reality changed and they adapted.

Think Fox "News" propaganda and how family members changed and became unreachable.

@silkester @Vidmo and there one of the biggest lessons I learned from researchers looking into why certain people hid others in Nazi Germany, while other people turned away or turned in their neighbors.

They had the same answer:

"How could I do otherwise?"

@joncruz @Vidmo

I grew up among Germans who lived in the Nazi era. One of their defense was survival. "It wasn't all bad. Hitler built the Autobahn" is the equivalent of we no longer had to worry to get food on the table.

When I was young light-heart Nazi romantic comedy were reruns on TV. UFA provided an escape from reality. You weren't morally challenged on a daily basis.

Plenty of Trump voters justify their choice with cost of living and a very warped understanding of freedom.

@joncruz @Vidmo

There is a big component: failure of imagination.

When I pointed to history and obvious parallels to MAGA supporters on Twitter, in 2020, I was often told that the US is different it couldn't happen.

Then I saw RNC photos with calls for "mass deportation now." The reality of millions has been altered. And they F-ing lack the imagination of how much worse it likely will get.

I'm fairly sure your imagination fails you when it comes to your fellow countrymen.

@joncruz @Vidmo @samadeleine @anildash

And while Evangelicals are not Opus Dei, Opus Dei had a hand in stacking US court with extremists, while Evangelicals provided the voters. Just like religious fanaticism latched on to Franco in spain

Billionaires couldn give a hoot. But they are happy to take advantage of the situation, just as Thyssen did and regretted when he supported the NAZIs..

Trumo is foremost a kleptocrat. But he also checks the marker for a full blown fascist & happily be one.
