THANK YOU to everyone who’s supported my run in ways large and small. To all our many volunteers, our donors, and everyone who helped spread our message. What we’ve accomplished is a testament to you.

Nobody runs for office alone. I could not have done this without you. And I have to thank you for putting your trust in me to work for you. Even- and especially- when it’s hard.

I congratulate Mr. Troxler on his sixth victory and wish him well.

When I decided to run for Commissioner of Agriculture, I did it because at 41, I’m still a young person in agriculture. If I wanted to have a future in agriculture, something had to change. North Carolina’s led the country in farmland loss for decades.

In the last 20 years, our farm economy has shrunk by nearly a quarter. And why is that? Because certain folks in leadership of North Carolina’s farm economy have stopped imagining new possibilities for our future.

But they certainly haven’t stopped doing what they can to hold onto power. To win this race, the incumbent had to raise more money than he’s ever raised before. He had to get backup from at least three different dark money groups backed by big agribusiness.

Why did they intervene in this way? I can only guess, but sometimes folks make peace with a sector’s decline as long as they get their piece of the dwindling pie. And they saw the same polling we did: neck-and-neck, while being out-spent and outgunned, with no name recognition to speak of.

We lost this battle. But the fight to revive our farm economy has just begun.

During this campaign, I met with farmers, workers, forestry professionals, and landowners across the state who desperately want better things for North Carolina. They want a state where the next generation can follow in their footsteps. And they know our current leadership won’t deliver that.

I want you to know I still believe the best days of North Carolina’s agriculture and forests are ahead of us. I’ve been honored and humbled by your faith- in me, and in a future that people like us can still call home.

@sarahtaber From far away, I'd like to say congratulations on a well-run campaign, even if it the end result was disappointing. Your updates were a nice antidote to the usual American political news, a reminder of how people do get involved in elected office to make a difference at the small scale of people they meet & subjects they know about. And I learned so many food facts!

I hope you can take a good long rest before you get back to your usual work of helping farmers one project at a time.

@sarahtaber "sometimes folks make peace with a sector’s decline as long as they get their piece of the dwindling pie". Sounds like the same story with climate crisis generally, and probably other issues too.

@sarahtaber What a lost opportunity for NC! From my view from across the country, you ran an amazing campaign and were a uniquely qualified candidate who could've made a huge impact! Would love to see you serving the public in the future, but regardless no doubt you will still have a big impact.

Loved your fun facts fundraisers and hope we haven't seen the last of you on the fediverse.
