Flights booked to Japan for September next year, doing a 5 week trip in Hokkaido and Tohoku with a few nights in Tokyo at the start and end. CANNOT WAIT! My itinerary is pretty much planned (but nothing booked yet). Am very open to your recommendations (for sightseeing, food, drink, hotels, anything). Thanks so much and woo hooo!

@kavey Noboribetsu in Hokkaido was beautiful, specifically Jigokudani.

@smellsofbikes Do you have any hotel or restaurant to recommend from there? Or anything else about your wider itinerary? <3 Thank you!

@kavey we stayed at a BIG resort there, the only time we did, and it was actually fun (aside from the japanese weirdness of having basically a brothel in the basement.) they have animatronic shows in town of the giant monsters that ... Tried to protect the area from human incursion. So that's odd.

@kavey I cannot remember the name but I'll find it tonight. It had this two story high robot in the middle of the hotel that performed 4x per day. It was so weird.

@smellsofbikes Haa, I love Japanese robots, we came across a few serving in restaurants in Korea too a couple of years back.

@kavey the one we stayed in is the one immediately southeast of the demon shrine because it had a hot tub facing the Jigokudani valley, which was pretty amazing. But it was a lot of $, by quite a bit the most expensive place we stayed the whole trip.
Another cool place was yamanouchi in Nagano. The whole town is an onsen. One jinja had the traditional hand and face washing well out front, with a carved dragon head that continuously blew steam out its nostrils.

@kavey we stayed at a small onsen here and the woman who owned it, whose family has owned it for 800 years, made the dinner for us and then sat and chatted with us about japanese cooking while we ate, and it was the best dinner I've ever had. It was astonishingly good.
