My intention is to move my static blog (created with Zola) from Netlify to self-hosting on a DigitalOcean VPS (running Debian). I would like to have a better idea of what is involved in hosting a website.
Documentation on DO is quite good.
I'm thinking of using DO for DNS management and Caddy as the web server:

@dwarmstrong Caddy is a good choice and I have used it quite a bit myself. I also host static sites on Netlify and played with the idea of moving to a self hosted setup.
Why are you considering it for your site?
In my experience you lose a lot of useful features: CDN, automatic optimisations, publish via git push to name but a few :-)

@axels Mostly for the learning experience of how to setup and admin a remote server, a website, with an eye to hosting other services in the future.

@dwarmstrong cool, that's a fun reason for sure and you motivated me to jot down my thoughts and remember how I did it last time π
(Add reminder to myself to turn a cleaned up version into a blog post and share it)

@dwarmstrong Running website on DO. DNS at a real DNS provider and Nginx/hugo. When adding other services such as mail be aware that it takes some time to build reputation (true for website too) and that some RBLs are scams - when/if you go there here's some material that may be useful:

@itisiboller @mwl Thanks!

@dwarmstrong
Do it! Hosting a static site is luckily the best task to start self hosting, since it's the easiest. Have fun!

@dwarmstrong
Also don't use DO for DNS, there are way better options like NameCheap or ClouDNS
