foo, bar, and baz are the worst variable, function, etc names to include in code tutorials.
Beginners especially will find them confusing because instead of seeing them as "obviously silly placeholders" they are likely to be thinking every keyword token seems silly, but is important.
It also breaks with the rule to name variables what they are or what they do (e.g. price_subtotal or calculateTax). Write tutorials like you would write actual code.

@travissouthard while I generally agree — and never use them in my writing — the alternative is painful. Coming up with example names and a back-story to make the name actually meaningful is quite difficult.
After many books avoiding them, I fully understand why they’re needed by some authors.
