@esoterra @smallJaguar @micah MMSI code is programmed into the VHF marine radio - but you only get limited attempts to enter it as an enduser before it needs programming with authorised equipment (often only available to radio dealers and has a cost). So its not unlikely that vessels are transmitting wrong code (with 252 LI instead of 525 ID ) unless the Coastguard and Communications Ministry of Indonesia orders them to be changed >>

of course if these (mostly) Asian vessels do run into trouble and the captain presses the red button for MAYDAY or PAN PAN, the Coastguard of Indonesia or whichever country they are nearest to will respond anyway and not be too bothered by the wrong MMSI code, so it may not be viewed as a major problem by anyone (and better than not having MMSI at all on board)
