@gray17 this is an interesting question, thank you for asking it! i'm eager to hear other opinions.

i sometimes describe it as "looking down the barrel of the camera", but will probably stop doing even that.

thinking about it further, if the camera the scene is recorded with isn't visible in shot it might be confusing to phrase it as "the camera" for a narrative work, since breaking the fourth wall could change the context of the film or image. e.g. if there's a scene of a movie being filmed in the movie, it seems much easier to explicitly stick to 'the camera' being what is in the scene and 'the viewer' describing the vantage point of the audience. so it seems more consistent to use "viewer", "audience", "our point of view", "in the frame", etc. for everything as a standard.

i don't think it matters as much for documentary-type films and images or real-world snapshots since the intent is different and suspension of disbelief isn't a part of the viewing experience.
