@joshg Yeah. Like. I was "gifted" in a middle school in Georgia. Where they desegregated the schools, but somehow my actual classrooms were still a lot whiter than the non-gifted ones.

@two_star @joshg Yeah, I've seen it mooted before that the push to establish gifted & talented programs in the 1970s was fundamentally a reaction to the desegregation of the public schools. I'm not convinced that this was the initial motivation -- the rhetoric at the time was more about fear of falling behind the Soviets. But if you give Americans a tool that can be used for racism, it's going to get used for racism, regardless of your original intention.
