Toot

Almost ten years ago I pitched a program where Wikipedia editors would reach out to genealogy enthusiasts to recruit them as new editors, and I still think this is a great idea: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Outreach_to_people_interested_in_genealogy_and_family_history

There's a huge community of people, mostly women, who enjoy and are really good at research and citing their sources! They could improve articles about towns, companies, etc, relevant to their family history.

I don't have capacity to make this happen in the near term, but maybe somebody does?!

@brittag Thia framing—genealogy as publication based on extensive research with citations—is great and I love it.

@brittag I've (gently) suggested to my mom that she consider becoming a Wikipedia editor—she's a retired high school history teacher and very active on the genealogy site WikiTree. She has all the skills needed!

@roslof Yesss! FamilySearch.org is also essentially a wiki even though it doesn't describe itself like that. So much good energy and expertise out there, and I believe that working on regional and cultural history is a great complement to family history, because families are part of patterns of settlement and migration.

@brittag @roslof great idea/insight.

Agree about FamilySearch being essentially a wiki, and their actual wiki (~meta) is itself quite useful https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Main_Page

I have noticed occasionally people linking to a Wikipedia article or uploading an image from Commons in FamilySearch but the obvious idea that some of those people should also be Wikipedians somehow never occurred to me. Obviously!
