Today's rabbit hole is the innards of the sewing machine. Managed to get forward and reverse working again, but now the stitch length looks wrong.
Found the service manual online but it might as well be in another language. I guess the feed dog is too high or the feed regulating gear needs adjusting.

@revk "Real" hardware, rotating cams and the like. One switch on/off, I suspect there might be a triac in the speed controller. Got an MK plug on it that I must have fitted which gives some idea of the age, I'd say 35+ years.
I've got it running and stitch length adjusted. Had to replace a pull wire to the reversing clutch with a length of fence wire I had to hand, so no warranty.
Still quite proud of myself.
