[#]cohost was the only website i felt at home at.

too bad they didnt make it.. maybe we can have such a site again eventually..

i mean, who am i even talking to here?

on cohost that was clear: nobody really.

i would just put stuff there i thought was worthwhile. not sure if it's the charlimit, or just the different "algorithm" (on cohost there literally was none, here? idk who half of the people are that pop up in my timeline, idk either is better, but this right here feels off)

@janet_catcus I never used cohost, but different fediverse servers have different character limits (I always set those I host to 5000 characters or more), so maybe that's something you could have a chat with your admin about if you feel constrained.

Your home feed on Fedi is determined purely by the people you follow and what they post and boost (you can turn off the visibility of boosts if someone you know is too prolifict in that department).

Local is people on the same server as you.

Federated is all the public posts by all the people everyone on your server follows anywhere on the fediverse.

I know it can be a huge upheaval moving social networks - it was hard enough for me getting my alt account off the ground here, and I'm pretty familiar with how all this works!

I hope you find a comfortable new online home, whether that's here or elsewhere, and I'm genuinely sorry that Cohost didn't make it it in the end - I know if was a very fitting and happy place for many people.

@HauntedOwlbear it doesnt feel like its only people i follow.. more like that plus everyone on this instance or something.. it's weird. but on the other hand it's just not cohost.

i have heard multiple people attest what you say but it just doesnt feel right.. maybe its just the "tiny posts answered by tiny posts" instead of post answered by comments or reshared.. or maybe its just "i dont know anyone here so here goes the crappy initialtime again"

miss me some css crimes ,_,

Toot

@janet_catcus yeah, the lack of customisation in the client end of most ActivityPub implementations is frustrating, especially as it doesn't have to be that way.

@HauntedOwlbear just now, i got a toot from some rando on my local instance.. im not imaginging this x'D wasnt quite certain when i wrote my last reply.

i mean, i dont mind it, more visibility i guess, but the cohost model was just better. you chose with whom to interact. nobody else will ever see your writing if anyone hasnt actually followed you.

but here? one needs to watch out to not step on anyones toes because stuff WILL be shoved into neighbourly timelines

so thats the difference

@janet_catcus Oh, I see, a reply from a rando?

I have one of my fedi accounts set up so only followers can see it.

I don't know how Hachyderm has everything set up, but on a server I run, going to Preferences > Other allows you to set default posting privacy to followers only.

However, I recognise that none of this changes the basic culture, defaults and assumptions of fedi vs cohost.

@janet_catcus I really hope you're able to get comfortable. Moving online home can be like breaking in a pair of tough boots sometimes.
