So uh. This is good. Not great. Progress but with limits.
But the more important question for software....
What happens to .io ?

@Di4na .su still exists; the soviet union doesn't. .io as a tld will most likely continue. while the tlds map roughly to the country code spec, afaik it's not a hard and fast rule.

@arcayr so uh. That one is more complex because part of the fight is that the .io money does not go to the islands.
It has been a big topic for the Chagosians to try to get access to that stream of money.
Also legally, the whole thing is... Complex.

@Di4na these are two separate issues and there's no need to conflate them.
money for .io doesn't go to the islands: true, and a disgrace. this is actually also the case for .ac, .sh, and .tm too, all because of the same person. i'm not sure how they claimed authority, but it's very clear it was an illegitimate claim. it was also (perhaps "justified"? i don't know what it takes to encourage an icann committee member) that profits for registrations of these domains went back into each country represented by that country code, but these claims have been repeatedly denied by the respective governments. this needs to be rectified to a complete extent for every single .io domain ever registered, plus interest, plus tip. further reparations need to be made for any damage caused by it.
what happens to .io: i changed my mind after digging into iso-3166. two letter tlds are supposed to represent country codes as defined in that standard. if one is removed from that standard, it is removed from use via a ~5 year process.
so i guess my original reply is wrong, the answer should be "it'll go away if icann follows their policy". i was only focusing on the literal "what happens to .io?", though. nobody said anything about "what happens to the money that someone owes after obtaining the extension through questionable means?", so i didn't answer that.

@arcayr Well not only that, technically all the contracts made with the entity that is handling .io are also not legal...
