Leftover habits from Postscript/MacRoman days still compel me to fill the old 'apple' character slot with a decorative element — what some at Font Bureau used to call a “party character”.
But maybe it’s time for me to rethink this …?
I’m curious: How do fellow type designers these days think about the 'apple' (U+F8FF ) character?

@kentlew We (OH no, and also at my previous job at H&Co) choose a different PUA spot for a logo of some sort for a little bit of fun. I think it's great to have a logo in your font but nothing is as frustrating as wanting to type an apple (maybe for some sort of phrase like "Go to > System Settings...") and getting some sort of goofy character!

@colinmford @kentlew Strong opinion: I have absolutely no compassion for someone who wants to type an Apple-🍎. Just write “System Menu” or something similar.
There’s also no Windows 🪟, Linux 🐧, or Android 🤖. In my opinion no commercial company should be able to rely on its own Unicode character (including X/Twitter). It’s standardized, interoperable fonts, not trademarks collections.
By the way: Your example apple shows as tofu on my phone, rightly so.

@kentlew How nice to be reminded of FontBureau’s term „party character“ 30 years later. David Berlow assigned surprising easter eggs to that key combination with every new typeface release.
