The Ballad of Gilgamesh Isle (first half)
Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
Of gods and beasts and death
That started with Enkidu’s birth
To tame bold Gilgamesh
The king was the lord of Uruk state.
Enkidu, wild and new.
The challenge was a feat of strength.
The king beat Enkidu. The king beat Enkidu.
Our hero friends then traveled east
To the hills of old Elam
They cut the trees of Humbaba
and laid him on the ground. They laid him on the ground.
The gods play games. A bull is killed.
Enkidu’s sick and dies.
Our hero seeks eternal life.
The gods are greedy guys. The gods are greedy, guys.
The Hero’s Journey is a trope but this here was the start,
With Gilgamesh
Enkidu too,
Humbaba and Ishtar.
The Bull of Heav‘n,
Sumerians, Akkadians.
Here on Gilgamesh Isle!

@bhawthorne @theothersimo @NilaJones After the first two lines, I was immediately reading this in the voice of Will Smith.

@theothersimo @NilaJones I am glad that people are enjoying my retelling of the Epic of Gilgamesh as a ballad in 4 verses and a bridge, despite its questionable scansion and missing the closing 4 verses.
Please feel free to share with attribution.

@MissConstrue Thank you! I like to think of it as the first half of the ballad of the short summary of the cliff notes version of the totally epic, Epic of Gilgamesh.
