Me: wow, this aluminium turns really nicely! It sounds almost like brass? Ha ha! Imagine if I was turning magnesium without realising!

IMAGINE IF I WAS TURNING MAGNESIUM WITHOUT REALISING.

@j

While at college I did a week of work experience at Dunlop aviation in Coventry, they make aircraft wheels, I am sure they said the wheels were made from Magnesium and had to be turned and formed in to shape, so this required a LOT of cooling to avoid the magnesium catching fire.

@j @trevorflowers That is the cutest lathe I've seen for a long time! I didn't know they come in such tiny sizes! :)

@M0KHR Do an image search for "watchmaker's lathe" to see how small they go. Pictured is my little Unimat which is just barely too big to fit in my pocket. 😸

@trevorflowers @j That's such a lovely little thing! I think it'll somehow fall into my shopping list now. I'll figure out what I'll be using it for later.

@M0KHR As far as slippery slopes into rabbit holes, tiny lathes and other watchmaker and jeweler machines are one of the most fun, at least to me.
