Archivists, librarians, and preservationists—without looking it up, do you know why analogue materials are called "analogue" (as opposed to some other label?) Trying to figure out how widely known this is in #digipres and related circles

@ashley Yes! It's because analog materials encode a signal that's directly analogous to the real signal of interest—e.g., the variation in magnetic charge over the length of an audio tape corresponds directly to the variation in air pressure over time that comprises sound (AIUI—I'm not an audio engineer)
