@ashley Yes! It's because analog materials encode a signal that's directly analogous to the real signal of interest—e.g., the variation in magnetic charge over the length of an audio tape corresponds directly to the variation in air pressure over time that comprises sound (AIUI—I'm not an audio engineer)
