I'm starting to feel like my job's project time-tracking method is almost purposely designed to trip-up everyone (or maybe just me 🤷‍♀️), and cause problems.

It only seems to work if estimates are 100% accurate (which they honestly never are) and if managers stay on top of adjustments and assignments (which they frequently don't).

And then I'll get allocated in a week for X hours of time on the project, but by the time I turn my attention to it (because it's only one of half a dozen projects), I find that I don't actually have X hours worth of work to be doing, IF the estimates are correct. :confused_dog:

But then, of course, the actual work to be done does end up taking more time anyway, BECAUSE THE ESTIMATES WERE NEVER ACCURATE TO BEGIN WITH!

I feel like I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't, and being who I am I naturally internalize all this as "I suck and am terrible at what I do." So, that's just great.

I'll readily admit, I am not good at time. Often to get work done, I kinda have to just ignore time and get into a focus zone, otherwise I lose a lot of it to retasking and refocusing. My day is also often broken up in to several parts by meetings, which means I'm doing this A LOT.

@lauren If it helps, I'd say it's very much not you. I've worked in projects where there's excessive time tracking, and all it does is cause more admin and the work doesn't go any faster.

Anything but a super crude estimate is always wrong as you discover more information that doesn't (and can't) become apparent until you actually start working on it.

There is also a whole "No Estimate" counter group around if, exactly because of these kinds of problems.
