I have many thoughts on the #PWHL teams' names and logos.

Firstly, I dislike all but two of the team names. Boston Fleet has a good double meaning and Minnesota Frost is decent.

Victoire de Montreal? Qu'est ce que vous ferais si vous perdiez? Renommer l'équipe?

Sceptres, as others have pointed out, are pretty well strongly associated as a masculine symbol of power. I don't want to dive deep into the politics of that but it's a strange choice for a women's hockey team.

New York Sirens. What can I say, the jokes write themselves.

Ottawa Charge? This is both a very weak name and will be laughed at as a political thing (wait til the team's nickname is the Carbon Tax). Ottawa has a lengthy history of being unable to name our sports franchises anything sensible; it's probably a side effect of a region that exists primarily as a seat of government. Then there's the logos.

Oh boy.

Boston is clearly lifted straight from the old Hartford Whalers logo. Sure they're both New England but tell that to Whalers fans.

Minnesota Frost is a purple lightning-y F. No notes; it grades itself. Probably the second lowest effort of the logos.

NY Sirens - I get what they're going for here. The colour scheme matches with other women's sports franchises in NYC. The problem is the sides of the Sirens looks like the CBC logo gone rogue and the NY being covered up makes it reasonably unclear.

The Victoire de Montréal logo looks like an art deco political party poster. The use of red and black and an eagle draws a bunch of lines that probably are best left undrawn.

Ottawa's got the worst logo of all as well. People online are pointing out that it's as though the Calgary Flames logo and the Cleveland Cavaliers logo had offspring. More than that, there's nothing really "Ottawa" about it. The logo could be an O or a C, whoopee. D- for effort.

I realize that there's a lot of difficulty in naming a new sports team in the modern day. Likely most names are already taken and so for a big commercial entity you have to worry about trademarks and such.

The thing is though, I think PWHL City sounded way better.

If you wanted to go with alternative names because an individual team identity is important, why not do a football style name e.g.: Ottawa HC. And do that for the cities that don't have great names.

I'm saying this all because the thing is, the product on the ice last year was great. Watching the local NHL club sink out of a post-season before Christmas meant I invested a lot more time watching the inaugural PWHL season.

They made smart decisions -- streaming all the games online. The broadcasts were excellent. They put the right people in the right places there to make the fan experience good. Most hockey fans get the game but most didn't know the odd rule differences the league ran with (e.g: the jailbreaker goal).

And then, to top it all off the hockey was exactly the inverse of what people across North America expected it to be. They let adults bodycheck one another. It was actual hockey, unlike the onerous IIHF rules women typically play by when fans had seen them before.

It was a fantastic product on-ice. The games were hype, the atmosphere in the buildings I saw on-screen was absolutely crazy. I had to watch online because the team basically sold out every game.

Overall, they made me a fan. A bad name isn't ultimately going to turn me off the team or anything, but it would have been nice if they knocked them out of the park because for some fans I'm sure that will make a difference, as sad as that is to say.
