Back in 2003, Terri Nostrand, a Washington DC science teacher, recruited her students and local skateboarders to build "Green Skate Lab" – a bowl built with community labor on a base of recycled tires. She taught a lot of science in the process. (I volunteered some labor to help build the bowl.)
