Now that #Brazil has banned Xitter, where are Brazilian people going?

Based on Google Trends, they’re mostly interested in #Bluesky, and to a (much) lesser extent, in #Threads

[#]Mastodon is nowhere to be found, which should immensely worry pro-Fedi people

[#]Mastodon has been losing users for a long time

Many of us warned that the app was too complicated, the culture too toxic, the economic model not strong enough to sustain a fast-paced development

In just a few months, #Bluesky shipped DMs, major moderation features, third-party moderation, and will soon ship video

The last major Mastodon update was 11 months ago. An eternity.

It pains me to see #Mastodon in such a dire state

Meta is building and growing #Threads quickly, and Mastodon can only acts as a powerful counterweight if the platform itself is in good shape

Today, it is not

It’s not catastrophic, but the writing is on the wall

And what’s virtually certain is that Mastodon has definitely missed the unique window that Elon Musk opened when he bought Twitter

Such a window won’t reopen soon, and possibly will never happen again

All of this should be a wake up call for #Mastodon as a community

I’m not super optimistic to be honest, which is why I’ve basically deserted the platform and I’m spending my time on #Bluesky these days

The silver lining of today’s events in Brazil is that even if Mastodon is left out of the equation, another open platform is benefiting from this mess

I’m muting this

Not that I’m surprised, but too many of the conversations this thread generated were very unpleasant, in a typical Mastodon way

If the feature existed, I would also close replies

But Mastodon doesn’t have enough resources to implement it, which is a massive trust and safety issue in my opinion

Not Mastodon’s team fault, but the end result is the same

I’m going back to Bluesky

Peace ✌️

This blew up, so I feel compelled to add a few more tings

  1. I hope to be wrong, ie that Mastodon will not lose the power struggle with Meta over ActivityPub

  1. If you want to see the kind of toxicity Mastodon is known for, the replies this thread get are right there for you to enjoy. Insulting a complete stranger over a social media app is some high level, genuinely unhinged, antisocial behavior. And of course, Mastodon’s lack of safety features makes impossible to tame this toxicity.

2 (continued) You can also see some unhinged unsolicited advices and people lecturing me as if I was discovering ActivityPub and whatnot. Girl, I was on Mastodon long before Elon Musk took over Twitter. This pedantry is so typical.

  1. The amount of disinformation about Bluesky in particular is still very high. Not that I’m surprised, but getting their facts straight don’t seem to be a priority for many people on here.

It’s WILD to see people reading a thread where I’m sharing my worries for the platform and where I say that Mastodon should grow, and then come to the conclusion that I’m "trashing" Mastodon

This is not how words work folks

Also, "why should we pay attention to him, he left for Bluesky?". Maybe precisely because I left the platform. In statistics, it’s called survivorship bias. If you only listen to those who survived, you will easily conclude that eating carrots cure cancer.

Eugen Rochko shared that Mastodon got 4k signups from Brazil for the past three days

Bluesky saw a million

My assessment is that it’s a very bad number for Mastodon

Wanting Mastodon to grow isn’t a "capitalist mindset" or whatever nonsense I’ve read in many replies

As I said, it’s a way to force Meta’s hand

But when the userbase grows by a number that is quite literally undistinguishable from a rounding error, it doesn’t reinforce the Fediverse, it weakens it. Possibly greatly.

But yeah, I’m a "hater" and I’m "trashing" the platform by warning that the current direction is worrisome for the platform itself

@o_simardcasanova

I've read the entire thread and I have to say that your behaviour is not that which I like to surround myself.

You are aggressive, graceless and toxic.

You say you are no longer on Mastodon and yet here you are saying this place is toxic while abusing everyone that disputes your assertions.

It's you.

The problem is you.

@zl2tod If you read all my posts more carefully, which you probably didn’t based on your reply, you would have seen that I positively engage with fact-based, constructive, and polite criticism and pushback

"You are agressive with people who are toxic, condescending, uninformed yet assertive, you’re the problem" is a hell of a weird take

@o_simardcasanova as a Portuguese language Mastodon user I can tell you the growth among Brazilians is very visible, i got dozens of new followers these last few days without making any effort for that, many other Portuguese users comment the same.. I also have to say that Portuguese language Mastodon is far less "orthodox" than the English language one. On the other hand many posts on bluedky are just about people missing X, if the website reopens in a few days most will quickly return there

@o_simardcasanova

We could do with a succinct term for this sort of logical fallacy - the idea that anyone criticising something must be trying to destroy it, when in fact survival is impossible without critical feedback.

It's everywhere and it's super frustrating.

On a recent video on Owen Jones's YouTube channel, he said that the left gets accused of "looking for traitors rather than converts". That's a nice phrase. I still feel we should be able to find a pithier term.

@o_simardcasanova Basically a well known, nasty, harassment tactics is to reply to the OP changing the visibility (demo below), so that only the harasser and his follower + those mentioned can see the answer.

Typically this results in say White people being utterly oblivious to the harassment black people are getting, because they just can’t see those messages. @mekkaokereke has made much more details explaining of that.

So you mention a lot of nasty replies, and I wonder how many I don’t see

@o_simardcasanova I don’t think the facts elicited the negative replies, but rather the condescending, “I told you so” tone. Trying to reduce social media to a zero-sum game with power struggles and winners and losers didn’t help either.

Imagine a post with the same facts, but asking questions, or at least requesting ideas. I bet you would have seen far different responses.
