Eating is one of the most characteristically human things we do. I'm not just talking about the biological necessity of it, but also what we eat and how we eat. If you want to characterise someone in a film, you show them eating: Denethor feasts messily while his son is being killed, Mr. Burns sits at a long, cold table, Patsy Stone has subsisted on bottles of Stoli since 1973, Charles Foster Kane sits at a long table and ignores his wife for a newspaper.

Which is why #USPol is so entertaining right now. #JDVance is one of the most alienating eaters I've ever seen: sitting awkwardly across the counter from a hotdog, posing behind a burger, asking for "whatever makes sense" in a doughnut shop. He's cold, awkward, cringey, and clearly miserable. He looks exactly like #InvaderZim trying to pass himself off as human by eating beans:

Not only has food been a key part of his political platform, there are photos and videos of him absolutely relishing food at county fairs and restaurants. I'm well aware he plays it up for the campaign, which is exactly what you'd expect a politician to do, but the key point is it's not a lie. The photos and videos predate the campaign. The enthusiasm he exudes looks genuine, as opposed to the soulless, remote alien he's running against.
