I’m still not sure how I feel about in person indoor conferences in the light of the Covid-19 pandemic, especially mid winter (making ventilation/outdoor flow harder).
But #KiwiPycon being in town, still having a “this is a masked event” policy, and “let us know if the CO2 levels are over 1000 on our meters” is about as encouraging as it gets these days.
So I’ve bought “the opportunity but not the obligation” to attend. (Early bird prices until the end of March 2024.)

Day one of #KiwiPyCon seems to have achieved their Covid-safe goals: CO2 levels by me (measured with my Aranet4) stayed under 900ppm in the sessions I was in (typically 650-850ppm). And most people wore reasonable/good masks all the time (with everyone wearing masks most of the time).
Good enough I’m willing to go back tomorrow 💚
(I entirely skipped the “indoor dining in the centre room of the building” and the “everyone in one room” portions of today though.)

As I’d guessed the air con at #KiwiPyCon, at least in the main (“Plenary”) room, can’t quite keep up with the necessary air turnover to be safe with a large group without two way masking.
Over the 70 minute period this morning (welcome plus keynote) the CO2 levels in the 85% full room grew from about 560ppm to 1002ppm. (20 minutes later, just after the morning tea break it was still at about 700ppm, half full, for the next talk.)

@ewenmcneill marvellous to have the chair proactively prompt those that came in unmasked to get sorted, however. I was at the Bar Association conf last weekend and ended up with over 3000ppm and only one other masked attendee, so this is paradise!

@PeterKelly yes, it’s very close to achieving its stated goals (everyone masked, under 1000ppm). Which as you’ve found most other events don’t even try to achieve.
My only reason for tracking it is to get an idea how close they are to the venue ventilation limits (largely because I believe the best long term fix, country wide, is much better fresh air ventilation standards).

@ewenmcneill I agree on improved ventilation/air quality standards being the long term fix. I'm also trying to encourage a charity to be set to to sue those who fail to mitigate the risk, esp. in schools and other settings (rest homes etc) where the vulnerable have no choice. Just the approach you would expect from a barrister!
