@mods I'm wondering if there will be any public statement about the reasons for blocking dair-community.social? The transparency and openness concerning moderation and blocking decisions on this server is something I value highly. I don't like it when I have to figure things out from third party posts.

@davidjamesweir @mods The vast majority of moderation done on this server is done without public comment. There is both a technical component to this one being more notable (the new feature in Mastodon to notify a severed connection due to defederation that didn't previously exist), and a social component (the notable public figures on that instance) that made this one more contentious and more widely discussed.

99% of our moderation decisions pass without any comment or public response by the team, for a variety of reasons.

@david @davidjamesweir @mods I agree with David Weir. You don't have to publicly comment on every decision but when someone asks for clarification, I think those should be provided. Transparency on these things is really important.

@ninafelwitch @davidjamesweir The @mods account has been privately responding to some requests. I'm only doing a public reply a personal level, outside of the mod team.

I do understand the desire for transparency when it comes to moderation. In this case we are providing details to our members, separate of a public response.

We are working up a blog post on it, but transparency alone is not the only concern for moderation, nor is transparency always helpful/useful. We have multiple years and several examples personally of cases where transparency has caused more harm. It's an issue in centralized moderation as well.

We don't have a great, or easy solution to it. We know that it's not ideal, and a vacuum easily leads to mis- and disinformation.

@david @ninafelwitch @davidjamesweir @mods I think there needs to be more interim communication and clarity for the whole community, even if big official statements take time. Frankly, the stuff last September worried me a lot, and this DAIR business is a big red flag. I'll be looking for a new instance or merging this personal account into my more professional account on m.s.

@_dmh If asking this is a followup to the statement that I just made, and adding it to the issues from last September, you may well be happier looking at a new instance or merging the account.

Part of the selection that you make when choosing an instance, for better or worse, is the mod and admin team.
