It's ironic how #threads is giving their users the ability to free their content from a closed system, and the #fediverse--a supposedly "open" system--is blocking those users.

Y'all say you came to the #Fediverse for "Freedom" but the truth is you're authoritarians, you just wanted to be the ones doing all the authorizing.

@schizanon but it's not that simple.... blocking #threads keeps the fediverse open, that is why it is being blocked....
Meta has a history of taking a product or something and twisting it to how it wants it, people are so wary nowadays. The news that facebook was snooping on snapchat data hasn't helped them either. I bet that facebook has snooped as much as it can on ALL of the platforms it sees as competitors

@3dcandy "blocking to keep open" is like "bombing for peace"

@schizanon yep - it is pre-emptive. If #threads is allowed to federate with everyone you can pretty much bet that #activitypub and the fediverse won't stay open for long

@3dcandy if you wanted it to be open you wouldn't want to close it. You don't though. You want it closed, just closed to the type of people you don't like.

@schizanon I think you aren't quite getting it - people want to have a choice, and many choose to block, that is the difference. On threads you don't have a choice about your data, in fact on meta products you simply don't have a choice. It is open, but with the choice to keep it private too

@3dcandy @schizanon I agree, for me itโs part a classic EEE strategy

@3dcandy as far as "snooping" you know all of this is completely public right? Anyone in the world can scrape your fediverse posts. They don't need to let their user's content federate to do that.

@schizanon yep - know that too - but doing it to other platforms is illegal in the US - so expect a hefty fine to go metas way. I understand what you are saying, but history has shown how meta ruins platforms/products by swallowing them up and/or buying them

@schizanon This is going to vary from server to server. Short of running your own server (I know, not a small ask), you may have to migrate to a server that chooses to federate with Threads.
This Reddit thread suggests that mastodon.social does not plan to de-peer Threads.
Here's how to migrate your account to another server: https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server/
