Toot

Written by Jon (Snarf) Mason on 2024-03-18 at 16:24

I need to start favouriting more things.

Years of Twitter's brokenness taught me like and RT anything I wanted to boost because, although I'm not a lunatic, the vast majority of the audience is web or default client so you need to feed the algorithm if you want to share things.

Now I can star things to say hey I liked that or just because I want it. The other day I was trying to find something I liked on here but didn't boost at the time. Now I can't find it. 😞

@jared no apparently I didn't fave it. That's my problem. I have the bad habit of "star and boost" or neither.

I need to remember I'm not on Twitter anymore and use the two separately for what they actually mean.

@snarfmason Ha, I did the same thing yesterday, couldn’t find a post I liked. Twitter trained me to stop hearting/starring posts on a whim or purely as a signal to the author because I knew it might surface them to my followers. I really disliked that behaviour.

@sjs yeah. I dislike that behaviour too. But I have it in my habits.

@snarfmason Totally, I get that. Just to be clear I meant that I disliked Twitter’s behaviour of taking an action that I felt was personal and then surfacing it to my connections without any regard for my actual intent. If I had wanted to repost it then I would have. Engagement metrics ruin everything.

@sjs yeah I knew what you meant.

I kinda split the other way. On Twitter I started liking and retweeting if I wanted to retweet.
